In November 2009 I visited the island of Madeira belonging to Portugal. It has a famous airport build on reclaimed sea water. The main town is Funchal. Home of Cristian Ronaldo .. The first thing that strikes of Funchal is the intense dark green vegetation unique to the island of Madeira. The old town has unique historical buildings, some as old as the 15th century. They are in the gray stone with white walls style. It has cobblestone pedestrian roads. There is a promenade that reminds me a bit of Santa Monica in California. Then there is a lift / cable car / funicular that goes up the mountain giving you great views of the island.
